The
Calumet Mine produced iron ore, and the D&RG carried it down
the steep 7.0-percent grade to Salida, where it was picked up by
regular trains to go to the steel mill at Pueblo. This branch was built
in 1881, and the Colorado Fuel & Iron's mine at Calumet is
featured. The gold camp of Turret attracted a lot of attention in this
beautiful landscape during the 1880s; however, no rich strikes were
ever made. A detailed text tells the newspaper accounts of this region,
where the editor always wrote glowing tales of its “great
potential.” Contains 320 pages, with 300 black-and-white
views and 17 full-color pictures.
