    Beginning at Salida, D&RGW trains of empty narrow-gauge gondolas were made up for the climb through Poncha Springs, Maysville, Silver Creek, and Garfield to ultimately reach Monarch. Limestone was being quarried in this district where once gold prospectors had roamed. En route, the unusual Garfield switchbacks are covered, where the trains went up 4.5-percent grades in sections. This volume concludes as the narrow-gauge operation was standard-gauged, and diesel road-switchers brought down the loads of limestone in general service gondolas.
